The Men's City Glass Team Beaten by Didsbury

Macclesfield's men progressed through to the last sixteen
of the Manchester & District Golf Alliance City Glass Foursomes
Team Chamionship.

The Manchester and District Golf Alliance was formed in 1924
and is reputed to be the largest of its kind in the Country.
In the current year there are 114 affiliated clubs.

Our men reached this stage in the competition by beating
Bramhall and former winners Helbsby with a whitewash
victory at home.

The team played away at Didsbury on Friday evening 4th August
but sadly the home team were just too strong and with home
advantage the eventual result was 6 matches to 1.

A valiant effort by the Macclesfield men, the furthest we have
reached in this competition.

Good luck to Didsbury in the last 8.

The Juniors are getting going at Macclesfield Golf Club.

We have welcomed 23 new junior members and the
Junior Academy launched last week which will provide our
junior golfers with a structured course of tuition, fun
competitions, days out and fun evening and weekend events
between now and March 2018.

Our PGA coach David Myers is doing a great job providing
fun, practical sessions for the juniors and this Wednesday we
start the next series of coaching.

For more information and to take part please contact
David Myers PGA or Paul Tovee our junior organiser.

Portpatrick 2017
Another great trip was enjoyed this year to Portpatrick in Scotland where all golfers enjoyed some unbelievable weather and the usual fantatstic hospitality with a great matchplay challenge by our Irish opponents.

Unfortunately MGC were unable to beat the Irish team on this occasion but it was very close indeed losing by just one match over the two rounds.

Rookie Paul Tovee took the individual Prize for Macclesfield Golf Club with a two round stableford score of 71.

Seniors Complete Their Winter League

The Final round of the Seniors Winter League was completed on the 15th March.  Over the eight rounds there were 102 entrants of which 71 managed to get in five rounds.  The winner is the player with the best aggregate score from five rounds.

The presentation took place at the end of Round 8 and
confirmed Andrew Green as winner for the second time
in three years with a staggering total of 222 form his best
five rounds.

Mike Hyde who could have been caught by a clutch of
hopefuls on the last day decided to take that risk away
by posting an improved score of 42 to take him out of
reach and claim second place.  Both received a prize of
an engraved hip flask, one reassuringly larger than the
other!  The positions from third to 12th had a range of
just 5 points but were eight shots back from the prize

Winner Andrew Green and runner-up Mike Hyde.

PGA Award for Jamie
Ryder Cup hero Jamie Donaldson received a PGA Recognition Award for his outstanding contribution to golf at a PGA fundraising lunch in

The 41 year old, who claimed the winning point for Europe in the 2014 matches against the United States, was the guest of honour in the annual event at the Midland Hotel which raises money for the PGA Benevolent Fund.

Donaldson will be forever remembered for sparking jubilant celebrations with a sublime nine iron to within inches of the flag on the 15th of the PGA Centenary Course to defeat Keegan Bradley 4&3 in the singles at Gleneagles two years ago.

It capped a career highlight to date for the Welshman who was playing off a seven handicap at aged 16 but climbed through the amateur and professional ranks on the back of hard work and dedication.

Along the way he has overcome a career threatening injury and landed the biggest win of his career at the 2013 Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, holding off Justin Rose and Thorbjørn Olesen to win by one shot.
The Abu Dhabi triumph came only six months after he broke his European Tour duck with victory in the 2012 Irish Open, where he fired a stunning 66 to win by four strokes at Royal Portrush.
He also won the Thailand Golf Championship at the end of 2014 while he notched three Challenge Tour victories to his name as he was coming through the ranks.

PGA chief executive Sandy Jones said: “Few people will forget that winning shot to clinch the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles. It was a fantastic moment but was richly deserved for all the hard work and dedication Jamie has shown over the years which has seen him rise to the highest levels of the game both as a top amateur and professional.

“We are delighted to present the PGA Recognition Award to Jamie at this annual Manchester lunch which helps raise money for the PGA Benevolent Fund.”

Dear Member,

Following the recent AGM, Marlene & I have now assumed our roles as Captain’s of your Club for the next year. We both feel very honoured by our appointments. Your new General Management Committee (GMC) is also now in place and you can see who we are, by taking a look on the website, or the poster near the Clubhouse bar. GMC, together with our staff, are all committed to doing our best to keep your course in excellent condition (weather permitting!) and making improvements to our facilities. There are many things we would like to do - if we had the money! However, we have to live within our means and currently, this means we have to be very careful about what we can afford to do. You can help by recruiting new members and letting us know what we need to do to ensure your continued membership - we are listening! Please bear in mind though, GMC is trying its best to look after the interests of the whole Club and it is difficult to satisfy everyone.

Best wishes,

Mike Baker (Captain 2017) & Marlene Connor (Lady Captain 2017)

Captain's Drive In 4th December 2016
Sunday 4th December saw the incoming Captain's & President play their first tee shots of their year.

Macclesfield GC members and friends turned out in force to watch Mr Captain, Lady Captain, Mr President and Junior Captain play their first tee shots before enjoying a sunny but cold day out on course in a twelve hole Am Am.

Congartulations to the winning team and thank you to everyone who took part in this fun day.

Good luck to our new club officials in their year.

We have recently conducted a survey with our members to gather views, comments and insight around all sections of the Club.

We will be holding a Members Meeting to discuss the results on Wednesday 12th October at 7.00pm.

The meeting will be facilitated by England Golf's Development Team from the Cheshire Golf Development Group.
We look forward to welcoming you to the meeting.
Captain's Charity Day
Captain's Charity day was held on Sunday 2nd October.

14 teams took part in this fun AMAM competition and enjoyed fabulous weather and the course in fantastic condition.

All players enjoyed a tea, coffee and a bacon or sausage sandwich before heading off to their tee's for the shotgun start. A tasty carvery and deserts were served after the golf.

The results were very close indeed with the top three teams seperated by a single point. The winning team was Team Price with a brilliant score of 93 points.

Many thanks to everyone who took part and gave genourously in supporting this years charity - The Peter Alliss Wheelchair Foundation.

Pictured are three of the winning team with Mr Captain. Rod Price, Paul Tovee and Peter Lloyd (Paul Baguley had to leave straight after the golf).
Sophie Receives Her New Wheels
Macclesfield Golf Club presented Sophie with her new chair on President's Day.

Sophie is 11 years old and attends Park Lane Special School. She loves
going to school and is a very happy and sociable girl who loves being
with people. Her favourite activities are going out for walks, swimming,
riding and going on fairground rides.

Sophie was born with Phelan-McDermin Syndrome (PMS). It is caused by a deletion of part of chromosome 22 which contains crucial genes for development - some of these are absent. Sophie has severe developmental delay. She has no functional language and has difficulties with mobility and movement due to low muscle tone.

Sophie received her new wheelchair in July, just in time for the summer holidays. Her first outing was to the Monkey Forest in Trentham, it was invaluable as the terrain was so hilly that it would have been impossible without the new chair.

Sophie's family - Mum Sarah, Dad Chris and brother Alex are so grateful to all at Macclesfield Golf Club who have helped with fundraising to provide Sophie with her brilliant new wheelchair.

Special thanks also go to Simon Paddock.

Bye Bye Bob
The club sadly says goodbye this week to our club secretary Bob Littlewood.

Bob has been with the club since 2007 and has been a helpful, welcoming, friendly face of the club to members and visitors alike throughout that time. I am sure we would all like to thank Bob for his significant contribution to the club and particularly in recent years with the various changes which have been made.

In retirement, Bob plans to spend more time on the course himself, “getting my handicap down to where I think it should be.”

A collection was made by our generous members and a gift was presented by Mr Captain at the seniors presentation on Wednesday.

Everyone at the club wishes you well on your retirement Bob.

We have a new face in the office, Andy Moss takes over from Bob on a temporary basis. He will be looking after the day to day running of the office. Be sure to pop in and say hello and give him our usual MGC warm welcome.

Yet More D&C Success
MGC's Mens B team have joined the Juniors and the Seniors who will all represent the club in their respective D&C finals.

On a fantastically warm tuesday evening (17th August) our mens D&C team took on Houldsworth GC at Macclesfield.

It was a great match played in the best of spirits and Macclesfield eventually emerged victorious by a really close 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 thanks to a great team performance by:

Mr Captain, Neil Johnson, Rod Price, Sean Lucy, Sean Smith & Paul Barber.

The final will be at Heaton Moor Golf Club.

Good luck to all our teams in their finals.

The Finals Here we Come
MGC's Juniors have joined the Mens B team and the Seniors who
will all represent the club in their respective finals.

Macclesfield Juniors played Ringway in the D&C knockout at home and
won the match with a convincing 4-1 victory. We play Cavendish at a
neutral venue in the final.

Our mens B team are in the D&C league final after finishing 1st in their league.

The Seniors have virtually qualified for the M&DSL Finals at Houldsworth defending the trophy they have won for the past two years and are going for a hat trick of wins.

Good luck to all our teams in the finals.

Up, Up, And Away
The drone filming of the course is now up live on our website.

Each hole has it's own flyover and from the air the course looks fantastic. All the great work Mark and his team have been putting in can be really appreciated.

A massive thanks to Greg, Jinny and the team at Lunar Aerial Imaging for providing us with such a fantastic product and service. More of their work can be viewed on their website:

The intro video can be viewed by clicking this link .

A Busy Week For Our Juniors
MGC's Juniors have represented thier club four times in a week.

We have had two Mid Cheshire matches and two Derbyshire and Cheshire
matches in the last week.

The Mid Cheshire Junior competitions are matchplay, sadly we didn't have
a great result against Crewe at Ringway losing 3-1. Fortunately our form
returned quicky to emerge victorious against Congleton at Prestbury
winning by 3.5 to 0.5.

The best gross and best nett scores count in the Derbyshire and Cheshire
league. Macclesfield hosted the first junior D&C of the season. We put in
a great performance with Ollie Tovee winning best gross (77) and Tom
Silcock winning best nett (66).

Macclesfield then played at Tytherington but sadly couldn't reproduce
their home form on the day.

Big Ronnie's Making His Mark
Macclesfield Golf Club had a recent visit by journalist Geoff Garnett.

Geoff Garnett from The Golfers Weekly & Macclesfield Express came
up to the club to meet our Head Greenkeeper Mark 'Ronnie' Hillaby and Rod Price.

Geoff had heard on the grapevine about the wonderful condition of the course and about all the hard work Mark and his team have been doing.

Geoff inteviewed Mark about the work going on and the improvements being made, following consultation with Jamie Donaldson and course achitect James Edwards.

We have had many visitng clubs recently in the mens, seniors, ladies
and junior sections and the feedback the club has received has been excellent. Everyone has all been extremely impressed with the condition of the course and the warm welcome they have received.

Very many thanks to Mark and his team for all their efforts, the course is in fantastic condition and we are very lucky to have such a dedicated and talented greens staff.

Look out for this story - coming soon.

Open Day Success
Macclesfield Golf Club hosted an Open Day on Sunday 15th May.

The weather and the course were fantastic for our guests. Nearly
sixty players went out from 9.00 in the morning and were welcomed
back to the clubhouse where they enjoyed a drink and a buffet.

Mr Captain, Vice Captain, Captain Elect, several GMC members and some
juniors were on hand to answer questions and offer a warm welcome.

Christian in the shop, Andy and the catering staff looked after our
visitors too with their usual fantastic service.

PGA Coach David Myers was also on hand to offer his expert opinion
and help out on the day too with fun practice for the kids and a bit of
coaching for those looking to improve their game.

Prizes were awarded for nearset the pin on all par 3 holes and a
longest drive on the 9th. A free raffle took place and three lucky
visitors won golf lessons with David Myers.

The day proved succesful as we recruited several new members and we are sure those who didn't join on this occasion will certainly be spreading the word as everyone was impressed with the layout and the condition of the course.

Here is a selection of feedback from the day:

"Greens are very good and bunkers as well" -  "Had a fabulous day, wonderful friendly people and food was unexpected, but lovely" "Thoroughly enjoyed the day. Were made to feel very welcome, thank you" - "Today was a very good welcome to Macc GC"
"Enjoyed the round, made to feel very welcome by the members" - "Lovely day. Great course condition. Thank you very much" "Lovely day, made to feel very welcome" - "Excellent course, well kept".

Many thanks to all those who helped out in preparation for the Open Day and on the day itself.

Spring Cup Has a Last Minute Visitor
Someone familiar turned up for a round on Saturday for our first major of the year - The Jamie Donaldson Spring Cup.

Honourary Life Vice President, Jamie Donaldson, enjoyed an afternoon round with club members in the glorious sunshine.

The course was in fantastic condition, with some challenging pin positions but this didn't faze Ryder Cup winner Jamie who finished his round with a respectable 4 under par.

Jamie was also on hand to chat with members after his round and present The Spring Cup to this years winner Gareth Robinson.

There's Something In The Air
Is it a bird? Is it a plane?
No, it's Greg with his drone!

For those who have played this week you may have seen something a little strange in the skies above the golf course. Local drone pilot and owner of Lunar Aerial Imaging, Greg Chivers, has been out filming some quite stunning footage of the course with his state of the art drone.

To see more of Greg's work visit his website -

The filming is still ongoing but here are a few images to help whet the appetite.
Design by Donaldson
Jamie recently walked the course with our head green keeper and course architect James Edwards.
They looked at what further enhancements can be made to the course such as fairway and green shaping.
Jamie drawing on his experiences of playing some of the best golf courses in the World.
Our juniors start their season
with a new look and a great win
Macclesfield Golf Club Junior section is undergoing somewhat of a facelift this season. Not only do they have new Junior Organiser, Paul Tovee, they have also secured sponsorship with local car dealership Chrome Motors. Chrome have supplied the team with shirts and jumpers as you just never know what the British weather has in store.

They paid their new Organiser and Sponsor back straight away with a convincing win in the first team event of the season by beating Ringway Golf club by 3.5 to 0.5 in the Mid Cheshire Junior League.

Following their win Paul commented, “The lads are really pleased with their new tops and are so grateful to Chrome Motors and Club shop owner Christian O’Connor for supplying them with such a fantastic, fresh new kit”.

This is just the tip of the iceberg though as Chrome are committed to junior sport in the town and are working closely with Paul and local PGA golf coach David Myers to provide school children in Macclesfield with free sessions both in schools and at the course.

David will also be on hand to offer his expertise at the Club’s Open Day too.

On Sunday May 15 young and old alike can try their hand for FREE at the home of Jamie Donaldson who scored the winning point in Europe’s triumphant 2014 Ryder Cup Team.

Your golf may not be quite up to Jamie’s standard (yet) but, with the encouragement and the help of David, you may surprise yourself.
Good Luck Josh
Macclesfield Golf Club member Josh Crumplin sets out today (Sunday 10th April) on his ambition to play professional golf by entering the Northern Order of Merit. Cheshire Curtain Services, Higgins Plumbing and The Loft Media & Television are proud to sponsor Josh and support him on his journey to follow in Jamie Donaldson's footsteps. His first game is at West Lancs Golf Club.

Work On The 16th Hole
This is a short video showing the fantastic work our head greenkeeper and his team are doing to address the drainage requirements on the 16th hole.
